Complementary Therapies Clinic for Asylum Seekers and Refugees
Tara Centre, Lancaster
Our free Complementary Therapies Clinic for asylum seekers and refugees opened in 2017 and has been running regularly since then. It is sponsored and hosted by the Tara Centre and staffed by a team of professional volunteer therapists who are all fully insured and in private practice.
Why do we offer complementary therapies to support recovery from trauma?
Many of the people who come to our clinic have experienced violence, torture, forced displacement, bereavement and profound loss. Some have survived long and dangerous journeys. Pain and trauma often result in disconnection from the body and from physical sensation in order to survive.
We offer massage and other somatic therapies as a way of welcoming people to a place of safety. Massage helps to ease pain, stress and tension, and it can also support a gradual reconnection with the body after experiences in which bodily safety and choice have been taken away.
We do not imagine that one session can undo what someone has lived through. Safety and trust develop over time. By offering regular sessions in a warm and welcoming environment, we hope to create repeated experiences of choice, dignity, care and human connection.
